Composer

Sergio Monterisi a effectué ses études musicales au Conservatoire « N. Piccinni » de Bari, où il a obtenu ses diplômes de piano, musique vocale de chambre, musique chorale, direction de chœur, instrumentation pour orchestre d’harmonie, composition et direction d’orchestre. Il obtient également une maîtrise en Lettres Modernes dans l’Université de sa ville. Il a été l’élève et l’assistant du compositeur et chef d’orchestre Nicola Scardicchio, qui l’encourage à se consacrer à la composition. Dans la lignée de la tradition italienne et de l’enseignement de Nino Rota, école à laquelle il appartient, et avec une sensibilité proche des compositeurs français du XXème siècle, il est l’auteur d’une vaste production de morceaux pour piano seul (Sonatine, Variations aphoristiques), de musique vocale (Fêtes galantes, Il Viaggio), chorale (Kyrie, Credo di Perugia), de chambre (Tre scene pour violon, clarinette et piano, Canti di rabbia e d’amore pour voix et violon) et symphonique, jouées en Italie et à l’étranger. Sa musique se nourrit d’une féconde communication avec le public et accorde une importance prédominante à l’investigation des subtiles significations de la parole chantée.

In 2005 he conducted in Italy his children opera Il Gigante Egoista, which in the French version is included for two seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10) in the Nice Opera program. In 2012 he obtained the First Prize and the Prize of the Popular Jury of the International Composition Competition "Terra di Puglia" for his "Concerto a 11" for piano and 10 instruments, which he conducted in world première in Bari the same year and published by Florestano Edizioni. His opera Schicchi e Puccini - A prologue to Schicchi (Edizioni Wicky Music) was the winner of the first International Composition Competition "Opera Nuova 2013" and made its debut in the opera season of the Teatro Municipale of Piacenza in May 2014 (resumed at the Teatro Savoia in Campobasso in the same year). In December 2015 he was invited by the Gubernatorsky Orchestra of Saint Petersburg for a concert of 21st century Italian music in which his symphonic poem The Legend of St. Nicholas was performed and two arias from the new opera Fantasmi all'opera on a libretto by Magali Thomas. In October 2016 he conducted the first performance of Africa in Campobasso, a musical show for voice and percussions inspired by the production of the poets of Négritude; the show was then resumed in Gambatesa in June 2017 on the occasion of the World Refugee Day, with the participation of a chorus of migrants. In 2016 he founded with Magali Thomas El Sistema France-Opéra Méditerranée, the first section of the international network of El Sistema (the largest project in the world of social inclusion through music) entirely dedicated to opera. Since then he has dedicated himself continuously to the composition of works that allow children a direct approach to opera as protagonists.

En février 2017 il dirige au Palais des Festival de Cannes, à la tête de l’Orchestre de Cannes, l’avant-première de son opéra trans-média Peter Pan avec la mise en scène de Magali Thomas (créé en 2019 à l’Opéra de Nice dans le cadre du projet européen MEDITES porté par l’Université Nice-Côte d’Azur en collaboration avec l’Orquesta Geraçao d’El Sistema Portugal et repris au Théâtre de l’Esplanade de Draguignan avec l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Toulon). Peter Pan, projet qui met au centre de la création les enfants de quartiers en difficulté, est finaliste du Prix de l’enseignement musical de la Chambre des Editeurs Musicaux de France.
En 2018, il réorchestre et réalise une nouvelle version française de Le Géant Égoïste au Théâtre Miramar de Cannes (qui sera traduite en espagnol et jouée dans une nouvelle production à l’Auditorio del Sodre de Montevideo – Uruguay – en 2021).

As part of the 2020-21 season of the Nice Opera, he creates the participatory opera Circo!; the success of the project leads to the programming in the following season of the participatory opera Babel, also created in Nice with the contribution of the images of the great environmental photographer and director Yann Arthus-Bertrand. The close collaboration with the librettist and director Magali Thomas is also pursued in other areas: from the completion of the opera Fantasmi all'opera, to the conception of the lyric series Divines, an original format of chamber opera "in series", of which he writes the first episodes. In August 2017 his song Cumm 'a mureje won the Critics Award at the Molise dialect song festival, while in October he conducted the first performance of his Concerto della Fenice for bassoon and strings in the auditorium of the Musée Chagall in Nice, in the program of the Festival “Musiques d'aujourd'hui à demain”, with the soloists of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice. In 2021 he wrote the symphonic suite Un jour de fête for the various wind ensembles of the Valbonne Conservatory and for the Nice Opera season, Célébration - Une messe pour le XXIème siècle for children choir, mixed choir, percussions and piano.
